Estimating task durations in MS Project

Duration is the number of working periods between the start time and the end time of a task. I.e. if we start a task on Monday morning and finish it on Friday evening, the duration is 5 days. We can devote not a full working day to working on the task, but 2 hours per day, for example. Then the Work value of this task will be equal to 10 hours.

That is, Duration and Work are two different time estimations of tasks.
The Duration column in the task table is used to enter duration estimates. Enter the number of time units and their letter designation, without spaces and dots.

For example: 5mo, 3w, 3.5d, 12h, 30m.

By default, the duration is estimated in days. In this case, you can leave out the letter designation of days. If you use other time units for estimation more often in your project, the setting can be changed (see Setting default time units).

Duration can be estimated in:
  • Minute - m
  • Hour - h
  • Day - d
  • Week - w
  • Month - mo
Duration can be set in fractional units as well as astronomical units.
