What is a Milestone?

A milestone is an important (key) event in a project, a checkpoint at which it is clear that a certain intermediate result of the project has been achieved.
Usually, in the task list in MS Project, milestones are formulated as follows: something is approved, something is completed, something is signed. In other words, a milestone states the occurrence of some fact. Signing of acts, receiving money for the project are often specified as milestones. It is also customary to put a “technical” milestone The group of works is completed at the end of each large group of works (summary task), even if by meaning at the end of this group of works no documents are signed.
The management you report to often does not care about the details of the project, reporting “by milestones” is a common practice.
Milestones usually do not have a duration. Therefore, the simplest way to mark a task as a milestone is to put 0 in the Duration column, i.e., set a zero duration. Program will immediately change the design of such a task in the diagram (it will be labeled with a diamond, by default).
But sometimes you may need to mark a task with a non-zero duration as a milestone (I consider this a bad practice, but nevertheless),
To mark a task as a milestone, you need to open the Task Information window (for example, by double-clicking on the task) and on the Advanced tab check the Mark task as milestone box and click OK:
A task with a non-zero duration will be marked as a milestone:
